UPS Joins Red Cross to Deliver Gift of Life
Wednesday, October 20, 2004 — ATLANTA--In September, UPS, one of the world’s largest express package delivery companies and one of the largest private employers in the nation, hosted its first American Red Cross blood drive in more than six years, successfully collecting more than 109 units of blood.
“Needless to say, we are delighted to have ‘Brown’ back on board with the American Red Cross,” said Chris Hrouda, chief executive officer for the Southern Blood Services Region, headquartered in Atlanta. “As a major employer in this region, UPS is an important blood drive sponsor and can help to make a lot more blood available for patients in Georgia.”
The blood drive marked the re-establishment of a statewide partnership between UPS and the Southern Region. UPS already has scheduled additional blood drives at four of its Atlanta-area facilities.
Cynthia A. Smith, the Southern Region’s minority recruitment operation manager, credits Devotis Lee, a UPS customer relations representative and a member of the Minority Recruitment Advisory Committee, with a key role in renewing the UPS-Red Cross partnership.
“It was because of [Lee] that we’ve been able to develop a new relationship with UPS,” Smith said, who also credited Cal Darden, UPS senior vice president of US operations, and Adrienne Holland, UPS occupational health manager, as key participants. Darden not only gave the drive his personal endorsement, but was also present at the drive and later took the time to sign thank you notes for every donor and volunteer who came out, according to Smith.
