New Hampshire Governor John Lynch Receives Red Cross Volunteer Award

Kathryn Forbes, Red Cross national chairman of volunteers, came to New Hampshire to honor the governor and to present prestigious award on behalf of the organization. The award ceremony highlighted the Greater Manchester Red Cross Red and White Ball held March 25.

“Governor Lynch is an outstanding supporter of the Red Cross and has given generously of his time and effort to help the people of New Hampshire when they were in need,” said Diane Becker, executive director of the Greater Manchester chapter of the Red Cross. “When the fall floods hit western New Hampshire, the Governor didn’t miss a beat. His leadership and accessibility—he actually gave his cell phone number to some victims—were remarkable. When the local Red Cross and WMUR-TV announced a telethon to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Governor Lynch and his family were among the first volunteers to step forward and answer the phones.”

During the evening which saluted the Red Cross response to Hurricane Katrina, Governor Lynch was joined by more than a dozen Red Cross volunteers who traveled south after Hurricane Katrina to assist families and communities of the devastated Gulf coast region.

Elliot Hospital and Wire Belt Corporation were also honored on behalf of the many businesses and industries that support the efforts of the Red Cross. The event was presented by Brady Sullivan Properties and the Greater Manchester American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
