Friday, April 07, 2006DYERSBURG, Tenn. – American Red Cross efforts continue in rural northwest Tennessee, as families struggled to regain stability after Sunday night's deadly tornadoes left many homeless.

As Red Cross workers traveled door to door delivering meals and meeting with families, loved ones gathered at funerals for some of the 24 killed in the storms.

As most of the affected are making arrangements to stay with family and friends, finding solace and comfort with their loved ones, the Red Cross is assisting some with hotel lodging.

The organization has set up a resource center in Dyersburg's National Guard Armory, where those affected can receive hot meals and meet with caseworkers. Additionally, volunteer caseworkers are traveling into communities to meet individually with those who do not have access to transportation or may not know about the services available.

In nearby Gibson County, volunteers continue to deliver meals prepared by Southern Baptist Convention disaster relief teams, stationed at the Assembly of God Church in Dyer, Tenn. The location is also acting as a headquarters for Red Cross casework in Gibson County.

Clean-up kits, toiletries and other items are available at the Red Cross bulk distribution site in Greenfield, Tenn., in Weakley County.

Red Cross volunteer caseworkers are meeting with each family individually to provide relief based upon their unique needs. The 125-year-old agency provides assistance with food, clothing, shelter, bedding, household supplies and medications as well as medical and mental health care.

Amy Hall is the Director of Communications with the Nashville Area Chapter of the American Red Cross chapter who has been deployed to support tornado and storm relief operations in affected areas.
