Are You Aware of How to Give Your Pets the Best Care?
Wednesday, April 11, 2007 — The American Red Cross wants pet owners to remember there is still time to celebrate National Pet First Aid Awareness Month by learning the necessary steps to keep your pets safe.
Each April, pet owners are reminded that, as a member of the family, it is important to know what to do if your pet is ever injured or has a medical emergency. The Red Cross "Pet First Aid" guide provides information to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies to care for dogs and cats in an emergency.
"Pet First Aid" offers help with everything from giving medication to step-by-step directions on how to perform CPR. To make learning to care for your pet easier, "Pet First Aid" features detailed instructions on how to administer care for 50 injuries and illnesses and includes over 130 easy to follow illustrations.
The Red Cross assembled a skilled team of animal, emeregency and safety professionals to develop a guide which covers many aspects of pets’ physical and mental well-being.
Pet owners will learn other great tips, such as:
- Paying attention to what is normal for your pet so you can detect signals when something is wrong;
- Learning how to build a pet first aid kit;
- Labor and delivery – and what to do if there is a problem;
- Making your pet part of a Family Disaster Plan, including identifying hotels and shelters that accept pets before a disaster situation; and
- How to spot signs of depression in pets.
"Our pets are as vulnerable as our children. They depend on us to keep them well and to come to their aid during an emergency," said Don Lauritzen, Red Cross health and safety expert. "National Pet First Aid Awareness Month is a great way to demonstrate that good family health should also include our pets."
