Tropical Storm Cindy Heads for Mississippi River

Written by Lesly C. Simmons , Staff Writer, RedCross.org

Tuesday, July 05, 2005 — Tropical Storm Cindy is expected to come ashore along the mouth of the Mississippi River late Tuesday or very early Wednesday, bringing mostly heavy rain according to meteorologists.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle. Rain and storm surges are the biggest concerns as the storm comes ashore, because they can cause beach erosion and flash flooding. Rain is already falling in New Orleans, and officials there are expecting six to 10 inches of rain to fall before the storm leaves the area.

Cindy is expected to weaken as it moves over land but will continue to bring rain as it moves north through the end of the week. The Red Cross is on standby to provide sheltering or other services as needed in the wake of the storm.

This is the second major storm of this year’s hurricane season. Tropical Storm Arlene came ashore in the same area where Cindy is expected to hit on June 11.

Further North, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in many cities along the Eastern Seaboard. Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston are all expecting storms later this evening and high humidity for the next few days. Parts of Pennsylvania can expect the same sort of weather.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dennis has formed on Cindy’s heels and is churning now in the Eastern Caribbean, with winds at 40 mph. The storm is moving toward Cuba at 18 mph, and is currently about 400 miles south of Puerto Rico. Meteorologists are looking at whether warm waters of the Caribbean might help the storm gain steam and reach hurricane strength.
