Red Cross Seeks Support from Facebook Users

Instant message conversations can translate into support for the Disaster Relief Fund

Friday, November 09, 2007 — Today is the last day to vote to help the Red Cross assist people in need.

Every time you have an instant message conversation using i’m, Windows Live™ Messenger’s i’m Initiative shares a portion of the program’s advertising revenue with the Red Cross.  The i’m Initiative is a program that enables you to help the Red Cross assist people in need through Windows Live Messenger.

The Red Cross is one of 10 causes that people can choose to support. With no set cap on the amount donated, the more i’m conversations you have, the more money goes to help the Red Cross respond to disasters of every size and scope through its Disaster Relief Fund.

To celebrate the new Windows Live, the i’m Initiative has issued a challenge: If membership in its “i’m Making a Difference” Facebook group hits 50,000 people before November 10, a $50,000 donation will be made to the cause receiving the most votes. That's above and beyond the $100,000 minimum they've already pledged to the Red Cross.

So, tell your friends, join the group, and vote for the American Red Cross. Every vote counts—especially since Windows Live will still give $1 per member to the cause with the most votes, even if the don't hit their goal.

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
