Family Receives New Home From Red Cross and Partners
When Hurricane Katrina hit, Christina Rivera and her three children ages 14, 12 and 4, evacuated the home they had been renting in Lucedale, LA. The damage from the storm was so great and Christina was uncertain about whether they would have their own home again. Thanks to help from the American Red Cross Hurricane Recovery Program and the local partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Christina and her family once again have a home of their own.

Christina was one of 15 families in the George County community that qualified to receive a Habitat for Humanity home. Client Recovery Specialist Bill Johnson was the case manager for all 15 families and the entire project was a partnership between Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross Hurricane Recovery Program.

The Red Cross Hurricane Recovery Program provided new furniture for all 15 homes, as well as funding for other housing costs such as wells and septic tanks.

Today Christina and her children, as well as the other families, have a safe place to call home and are very appreciative of the Red Cross and partners.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
