A Time to Recognize and Energize

More than an opportunity to thank volunteers, National Volunteer Week offers a chance to inspire others to help

Monday, April 28, 2008 — The week of April 27 to May 3 marks National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate those who make a difference in their communities and inspire others to discover their power to be agents for social change. National Volunteer Week has been recognized every year since 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order to establish the week as an annual celebration of volunteering.

As the nation's largest volunteer organization, the American Red Cross is a leader in providing meaningful opportunities for people from all walks of life to help those in need. The Red Cross depends on volunteers to provide relief to victims of disaster, donate blood for those facing medical emergencies, teach lifesaving skills such as first aid and water safety, and respond to calls for assistance from our sister societies in other nations.

This week, we will highlight some of the people who help us make a difference every day in cities and towns across the country. If you'd like to make a difference, contact your local Red Cross chapter.

Every Red Cross volunteer is a star. Some are also celebrities
Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders brings together members of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet and everyday volunteer heroes for a series of portraits. The result: a photo gallery of Red Cross volunteers from all walks of life who make it their business to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
