Nextel Raising Funds for Armed Forces Emergency Services through Donate a Phone Campaign

You can help by donating a phone and/or cash at any Nextel Retail Store nationwide

Tuesday, May 06, 2003 — For more than a hundred years, the American Red Cross has provided a lifeline for men and women of the armed forces that connects them with their families back home whenever there is an emergency. It’s a critical service that meets the emotional needs of both military personnel and their families.

Through a worldwide communication network that includes workers who live and work alongside troops, the American Red Cross delivers urgent news of death, serious illness or birth to the frontlines or the home front. The American Red Cross served a record number of more than 20,000 service members and their families during March of this year. An average of 14,500 families were served each month prior to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The cause and the timing couldn’t be better for Nextel to lend a hand.

Nextel is supporting the American Red Cross through December 2003 with a unique program called Donate A Phone®, and is urging the public to bring their old wireless phones from any manufacturer, make or model to any of its 450-plus retail stores nationwide. Consumers can also make direct cash donations to the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services at any Nextel-owned Retail Store.

The proceeds from recycled phones and all cash donations will go directly to the humanitarian organization to support the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services program, which provides assistance and comfort to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families across the country and around the world. On average, the recycling of each phone will result in a cash contribution of $1.50 to support these vital services.

Help the American Red Cross and Nextel answer the call of those who have answered the call for America. Donate a phone and / or cash at your local Nextel-owned Retail Store today. Supporting military members and their families has never been easier!

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. The Red Cross also supplies nearly half of the nation's lifesaving blood. This, too, is made possible by generous voluntary donations. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. You can make a secure online credit card donation or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Or you may send your donation to your local Red Cross or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013. To donate blood, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543), or contact your local Red Cross to find out about upcoming blood drives.
