Coordinated Blood of the Martyrs Blood Drives Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“What are we going to do for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Dad?”

Thursday, January 15, 2004 — The Coordinated Blood of the Martyrs Blood Drive honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began as a result of a simple question from a teenager, the desire by a Catholic Bishop to honor Dr. King and the subsequent cooperation of a number of organizations, the Mid-Michigan Red Cross, and the Diocese of Lansing spearheading the concept. While various entities such as schools, churches, government institutions and others had previously held singular blood drives on the federal holiday honoring Dr. King, there had never been a coordinated effort to publicize them all nor to educate the public about the need for such self-sacrificial giving on such a wide scale.

"When Bishop Carl Mengeling approached me four years ago to inquire about a way of celebrating Dr. King's holiday, I didn't know at that time that his request, my son's question and my work with the Great Lakes Region and Southeastern Michigan Region of the American Red Cross, Dow Corning and Dow Chemical as well as the National Black Catholic Congress and American National Red Cross would result in blood supplies for nearly 20,000 people in just three years," says Ronald Landfair, M.P.S., Director, Black Catholic Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing. Coinciding with National Blood Donor Month, the January drives have helped to shore up blood supplies during a historical low donor period, as well as providing a potential fruitful inroad into communities such as the African-American community who historically have had low donation rates. This then has become one way, one response to Dr. King's vision-to truly do something for someone else. That something is to give the ultimate gift, the Gift of Life!
