Youth Council Leadership Volunteers Plan for FY '06

Tuesday, August 23, 2005 — The American Red Cross involves more than a quarter-of-a-million youth and young adults age 24 and under. Fourteen of these volunteers serve on the National Youth Council, a panel created to represent Red Cross youth and to enhance their involvement throughout the organization.

National Youth Council meets in Phoenix to set this year’s strategic goals.

On August 5 and 6, the National Youth Council convened a summer meeting at the home of Red Cross National Chair of Volunteers Kate Forbes in Phoenix, Arizona. At the meeting, council members finalized their strategic plan, reviewed current council guidelines and set up a new committee structure. During fiscal year 2006, council focus will be on tracking strategic goals, communicating with the organization, fundraising and assessing the value of events. The National Youth Council will also work to increase blood collections through the network of Red Cross college clubs across the nation.

Red Cross youth volunteers have fun and make new friends while they are helping the people in their community who need help. Youth and Young Adult volunteers participate in all aspects of the Red Cross, including leadership and governance. Youth serve on local Red Cross boards of governors; teach health and safety classes such as First Aid, life guarding and emergency response that provide lifesaving skills; participate in leadership training camps; work at blood drives; raise funds; and more.
