Tuesday, June 08, 2004 Students at the Charles Drew Model School in Arlington Va. threw a birthday party to celebrate the 100th birthday of Dr. Charles Drew with his family. Dr. Drew was the creator of the first blood bank of the American Red Cross.
The celebration on Saturday, June 5 included several members of Dr. Drew’s family, including his sister Nora Drew Gregory, and two of his children, Charles Drew Jr. and Charlene Drew Jarvis. Ms. Gregory spoke to the audience about her family’s life when she was growing up, and Dr. Jarvis told the children in the crowd to work hard like her father did to achieve their dreams.

“Dr. Drew would be so proud if he could be here today, to see all of you children, and he would want you all to work your hardest and do your best, always,” Dr. Jarvis told the students.
In Dr. Drew’s honor, the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac region held a blood drive with a goal of 100 units to mark his 100th birthday. The Red Cross also donated a portrait and gave a set of books about his life to the school library.
