Now the Southern California Blood Region is taking time to celebrate that diversity. The Red Cross held annual events celebrating Asian-Pacific Islander Month and continued its annual tradition of celebrating Black History Month. The events, sponsored by the Diversity Task Force and the EARC, are intended to raise cultural awareness while honoring the rich histories and contributions of this country’s diverse cultural array.
Asian Pacific American Month featured a Korean Dalma drummer On May 29, the Red Cross held its first annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration. Performers representing several cultures within the Asian Pacific diaspora entertained a full house in the Bowen McCoy auditorium as the audience dined on an assortment of Asian foods. The performers ranged from the thundering rhythms of a Korean Dalma drummer and a Japanese Taiko drumming group to the rhythms of a Hawaiian hula dancer and a special Filipino dance performance, which featured Red Cross employees Dante Topacio and Jennifer Daluyot. An extraordinary Chinese zither recital had the audience all aglow, but emcee and Red Cross employee Gordon Wong, as well as Red Cross Board Member Ann Kusumoto, reminded the audience that the celebration was about more than just the traditions from the Asian continent. “I don’t speak Chinese. I’ve never been to China. I’m Chinese American. This is my home, yet I’m constantly reminded of how this country wants to portray Asians as foreigners,” said Wong. Kusumoto agreed, emphasizing the need for more mainstream awareness of Asian Pacific cultures, as well as betting understanding amongst the various Asian Pacific cultures themselves.
The Billy Harris Jazz Duo performed at the Red Cross during Black History Month The Black History Month celebration, held on February 21, featured live jazz by the Billy Harris Jazz Duo, a Harriet Tubman presentation by DeBorah Sharpe-Taylor and a performance by the 32nd St. Elementary School Dancers. La Tijera Elementary School student Elease Milo, winner of the 2003 citywide King Day Speech Contest, delivered her award winning speech entitled “My Responsibility to Make Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream a Reality”. Several Red Cross staff members went the extra mile to make the event happen, most notably Damon Duncombe, who emceed, Stacey Burroughs, who helped cater the soul food, and Glenda Bridges, who coordinated the entire program. Each of the events was preceded by a display in the Red Cross’ main lobby featuring information about the respective month-long celebration. The displays, posted by Amy Hoyt of the Celebrating Diversity Subcommittee of the Diversity Task Force, breathed life into the normally stark hallway and will continue to educate and inform staff in accordance with the month’s designated celebration. Other months celebrated include Women’s History Month, Older American’s Month and Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. Hispanic Heritage Month will take place in September.
