Awards Received for Masters of Disaster® curriculum materials

Benny Award — September, 2000

The "Benny Award" was presented to Reese Press of Baltimore, Maryland, for the print quality of the Masters of Disaster kits. Representatives from Reese Press visited Disaster Services at National Headquarters to deliver the "Benny" statue, representing the Printing Industries of America "Best of Category" winner in the 2000 Premier Print Awards. It is the printing industry's most prestigious worldwide competition honoring outstanding achievement in print media. And the Benny itself-the universal symbol for Excellence in Printing-is its most coveted award. The award is a statue of Benjamin Franklin, recognized as the first printer in the United States. The "Masters of Disasters" kit was one of over 6,000 entries in the category in which the kit competed and won.

Clarion Award — June, 2001

The "Masters of Disaster" curriculum was selected for a 2001 Clarion Award, in the category of "Special Print Communications." The Clarion Awards is a renowned competition recognizing the best works from all communications fields. Entries are judged against the work of their peers in size and budget to ensure that everyone from the largest ad agency to the smallest newspaper are fairly considered.

Telly Award — May, 2001

The "Masters of Disaster" videos won three Telly Awards, presented to showcase and give recognition to outstanding non-network and cable commercials.

Silver (winner) award for the Earthquake Segment
Bronze (finalist) award for the Hurricane & Flood Segment
Bronze (finalist) award for the Tornado & Lightning Segment

The Telly Awards was founded in 1980, The competition was expanded several years ago to include film and video productions. Over the past 21 years, the Telly Awards has become a well-known, highly respected national competition.

Apex Award — August, 2002 For "Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal With Terrorism and Tragic Events"

The APEX 2002 Award of Excellence in the "Brochures, Manuals & Reports" category was awarded to the American Red Cross for "Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal With Terrorism and Tragic Events." According to the award-granter's web site, APEX 2002 -- the 14th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence -- is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures and Web sites. According to the APEX 2002 judges, "The awards were based on excellence in graphic design, quality of editorial content and the success of the entry in conveying the message and achieving overall communications effectiveness." "Facing Fear" was among 3 winners of this category in the nonprofit organization submission section, out of 656 total entries in the category, and 5,863 entries for all categories for which APEX awards are granted. The APEX Awards for Publication Excellence is an annual competition for writers, editors, publications staff and business and nonprofit communicators. It is sponsored by Communications Concepts, Inc.
