Masters of Disaster

We’re giving away
9 free Masters of Disaster
Curriculum Kits, a $405.00 value!

Be the first to align Masters of Disaster lessons to your
State Education Standards and receive 9 Masters of Disaster
Curriculum Kits
Free!

The offer:

We will provide nine individual curriculum kits of your grade level choice, a value of $405.00, to the first person in each state to align Masters of Disaster lessons to their state standards.

Masters of Disaster is a standards-based curriculum. Lessons are integrated into core subject areas to meet National Education Standards. A matrix listing lessons meeting National Education Standards is shown in the front of each teacher lesson plans book. Additionally, many states have adopted standards comparable with National Standards meeting their own particular interests and curriculum requirements. Our goal is to have a matrix showing Masters of Disaster lessons meeting each state's, the District of Columbia and all territories' educational standards..

Here’s how:

  • If you would like to take advantage of this offer, begin by sending us an email at curric@usa.redcross.org so that we may know of your interest. From there, we will help put you in touch with someone familiar with Masters of Disaster from your local Red Cross chapter. You will need to collaborate with them in this process.
  • Next, obtain a copy of your state education standards. Your local school should have copies available in the office or for checkout from the library. Or, download the standards from your State Department of Education, your county, or school district’s web site. Public libraries may have copies for checkout as well.
  • Once the state standards are in hand, compare them to our web version of the standards matrix, titled Masters of Disaster Lessons Meeting National Education Standards. You may find that many of the sub-titles (known as strands) are the same nationally as statewide, so begin your chart by duplicating those strands and the lessons that apply. If your state standards contain additional strands, add them to your state chart.
  • Review each lesson in the curriculum to see which ones apply to the strand(s) you have added. Chart those lessons, being careful to show consistency by recording them in the same manner shown in the State Standards Template or by contacting curric@usa.redcross.org. In some cases, state standards will consist of fewer strands than those listed nationally, typically because one or more strands have been combined. If that is the case, list the state’s combined strand on your matrix, locate the separate strands listed on the Masters of Disaster National Education Standards matrix, and combine all lessons which apply to those strands on your newly created one. Title your matrix Masters of Disaster Lessons Meeting (name of state) Education Standards - (subject area).

If you would like to take part in this offer, please email us at curric@usa.redcross.org, and let us know in advance so we can list YOUR state as one that is "in the works." This offer is good for the first chart we receive from each state. Thank you for playing an important role in the ongoing success of Masters of Disaster.

States currently "in the works"

  • Florida
Alignment of the Masters of Disaster Curriculum with Florida's Sunshine State Standards is underway and should be completed in May, 2001. The project is the result of a partnership between the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the University of North Florida-Florida Institute of Education and the Florida Department of Education. Once completed, schools will have access to a matrix that links lesson plans with state standards at the benchmark level. For questions about this project, please contact Julie Collins, Office of Safe Schools, Florida Department of Education (collinj@mail.doe.state.fl.us).
