Description
According to fire safety experts, four out of seven home fires occur in the winter months November through February. This is why we have released "Safety Watchers" and its related materials at this time – to provide additional resources for educators to conduct home fire safety lessons and activities for children of elementary school age.
Following the successful format of Masters of Disaster™ natural hazards curriculum for children, Safety Watchers Home Fire Safety Lessons were written to meet education standards in science, math, and language arts, social studies, and art. The curriculum provides proactive ways for students and families to prepare and plan ahead by writing home evacuation plans and practicing drills, focusing on preparedness and safety.
Safety Watchers was developed by the Disaster Services Department at the American Red Cross in collaboration with experts in education and fire safety through a small grant provided by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to meet a specific need that they had. The content of Safety Watchers is in the public domain, and not copyrighted. It may be duplicated for use by anyone who works with children – teachers, Red Cross and fire department educators, parents, Scout Leaders, and so on. The lessons and activities are available for grades K-2 and 3-5.
Lesson Plan Objectives:
- Help young people feel safe and prepared for a potential home fire. Help teachers talk to their students about fire safety.
- Give students experience in how to act during a fire emergency at school and at home.
- Give students the ability to recognize and demonstrate fire safety rules.
- Give students the ability to identify objects that could burn them.
- Help children and families know what to do and how to prepare for the future.
At this time, the Safety Watchers Home Fire Safety lessons and activities are only available for downloading as PDF files. If you experience technical difficulties downloading these lessons and activities, please send an e-mail to Curric@usa.redcross.org.
If you are interested in more standards-based, teacher-tested lessons, please contact your local Red Cross chapter (find them listed in your local telephone directory or use the on-line locator).
