Dear Friend,

The Red Cross is dedicated to serving all people with equality and excellence. After a disaster, people with disabilities are welcomed in Red Cross shelters, as are their service animals and other necessary aides.

By becoming a Red Cross disaster relief volunteer, you can help ensure that people affected by disaster, including those with disabilities, get the help they need from people who understand. For instance, Sign Language interpreters can help disaster relief clients who are deaf or hard of hearing by pairing up with Red Cross workers.

There are a few ways to volunteer:

Become a Spontaneous Volunteer
The Red Cross often involves hundreds of local “spontaneous” (new) volunteers in large scale disaster response. Your skills and experience may be a perfect fit to match up with our experienced Red Cross volunteers. Disaster training is available.

Join Your Local Chapter’s Disaster Action Team (DAT)
Few people know that the number one disaster in the United States is the house fire. More than 70,000 occur every year. You can provide aid and comfort to victims of local house fires and other emergencies in your community by becoming a DAT member at your Red Cross chapter.

Join the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) System
Get trained, and lend your special skills and talents to help victims of disasters locally and around the country.
