March is Red Cross Month

What's a hero? Like art, heroism is in the eye of the beholder. You know a hero when you see one. And at the American Red Cross, we are fortunate to see heroes every day.

They are volunteers who are willing to leave their homes when the call comes to make sure a local family has a place to sleep, clothes to wear and food to eat after a devastating home fire. They are people who get trained in their free time so they can volunteer to set up shelters in the wake of a major disaster. People who learn how to save lives through first aid and CPR are heroes, just like those who roll up their sleeves to give blood, or write checks to support the vital work of the Red Cross. Our youth volunteers play a special role as a new generation of heroes working to make America a better place.

The Red Cross draws its very identity from the millions of everyday heroes who donate their time, blood and financial resources to the organization. These hometown heroes are the face of the Red Cross, and its most valuable asset. As part of our annual celebration of Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross is honoring our Hometown Heroes on a special website www.redcross.org/hometownheroes. Check out the site today to submit your definition of a hero or send an eCard thanking a hero who's made a difference in your life.
