Measles Initiative: Partner's for Measles Advocacy 7th Annual Meeting

By: Lily Jones, Outreach Coordinator, International Services

The Partners for Measles Advocacy 7th Annual Meeting was held on February 27-28, 2007. Hosted by national headquarters, the two day meeting involved reporting on the progress of Year Six and planning for Year Seven. The meeting focused on exploring additional integration of health initiatives into measles campaigns and malaria prevention activities. Representatives from all five of the founding partners of the Measles Initiative were in attendance (the American Red Cross, the United Nations Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Health Organization) as well as Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, American Red Cross chapters and the National Youth Council. There were more than 150 people in attendance from all over the world.

There are multiple countries, particularly in Asia, that still have a very high burden of measles. The initial pilot phase in four districts of Pakistan will be held on March 1-18. The campaign will target vaccinations of almost three million children age nine months to 15 years old in just over two weeks. There will also be a nationwide campaign, implemented in phases that will cover several districts at a time throughout the year.
