Women, Life-Income Gifts and the Red Cross

Women have a special advantage when it comes to making "life-income" gifts to the Red Cross especially in the area of charitable gift annuities. Women continue to outlive men by several years. Commercial firms that issue annuities take longevity differences into account, and often pay lower annuity amounts to women than men. But gift annuity payout rates at the American Red Cross are gender-neutral.

Of course, favorable life expectancy tables have little to do with why women make life-income gifts. Gift annuities offer women the satisfaction of doing far more to help the Red Cross than might otherwise be possible. Furthermore, life-income gifts can achieve a variety of personal goals, such as:

— assisting a friend or family member;

— saving income taxes and capital gains taxes;

— reducing probate costs and death taxes;

— transferring investment responsibilities to someone else.
