What Did Jackie Onassis Know About Estate Planning?

"I would like to assist the Red Cross with a major gift from my estate, but I feel I have an obligation to leave everything to my children." – Mr. R.

Does that sentiment reflect your own situation? If so, you might consider a gift technique that allows you to give the American Red Cross merely the income from investment assets for a number of years. This technique – the charitable lead trust – lets you control the eventual distribution of all your property and share a meaningful gift between your family and the American Red Cross. You can fund a lead trust right now or through your estate plan.

Lead trusts are generally used to reduce federal transfer taxes (gift or estate taxes) that currently affect individuals with estates over $2 million. The lead trust can also be a good strategy for grandparents who face generation-skipping taxes. The estate plan of Jackie Onassis, for example, included a trust that was to pay charities an 8% income for 24 years and eventually pass to grandchildren – free of any transfer tax.

Wed be happy to explain how a lead trust might be helpful to you. Just contact us.
