America's Veterans Honored Daily by Red Cross Services
At 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, European battlefields fell silent, the sound of gunfire replaced by cheers that echoed across the Atlantic and throughout the United States as the end of World War I was universally recognized. Each year, more than 1,300 regular service and 4,000 occasional American Red Cross volunteers, through the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS), proudly give a total of 130,000 hours to help the veterans in VA medical facilities. The Red Cross was one of eight charter members when VAVS was formed in 1946. Today, there are 63 major veteran, civic and service organizations which report to the Under Secretary of Health.
