When disaster strikes, the American Red Cross will be there. The Polk County Chapter maintains 24-hour a day readiness...We ensure all effected families have a place to stay, food to eat and fresh clothing. Other client needs are met either through Chapter resources or referral to other agencies. All Red Cross disaster relief is provided absolutely free of charge, a gift from the American people, who generously contribute their time, money, and skills to help others in time of need.
Last year (July 2006-June 2007), volunteers in Polk and Highlands counties assisted 154 families last year after their lives were devastated by single family emergencies, the majority of which were house fires. In the last six months (July-December 2007) volunteers have assisted 107 families after disasters, including nearly three dozen from muliple family fires, which burned apartment buildings or two or more homes at once.
Offers courses to private citizens, first-responders, community groups, organizations, and businesses in CPR, water safety, life-guarding, first aid, HIV/AIDs awareness, and other life-saving skills. Students must pre-register over the phone, and may pay over the phone via credit card or check card. Check or cash payment must be accepted in person at your local Red Cross office, or mailed in time to be received before the class.The course schedule is available online.
Red Cross has been a partner of America's Armed Forces since 1905, and we are proud to continue this tradition today in Polk and Highlands Counties. The Red Cross provides 24-hour a day response to military families for conveyance of emergency messages to and from service members around the country and around the world. We provide notification of birth, death, illness in immediate family, and health and welfare inquiries for separated family members.
