American Red Cross Benefits

Changing the World One Employee at a Time...

At the American Red Cross, our people are our most valuable asset and because of this, our benefits program is both comprehensive and competitive with other organizations. We are fully committed to meeting the needs of our employees and to providing a quality benefits program.

Eligibility for some employee benefits is based on a minimum number of hours worked per week. Specific benefits information is available in the summary plan descriptions for each plan. Benefits offered by local Chapters and Blood Regions may vary.

Medical and Dental Insurance Benefits
For National Headquarters Opportunities

Benefits are effective the first of the month following date of hire. Eligible employees must enroll within 31 days. A one page summary of benefits is available.

Medical:

The Red Cross pays the major portion of the cost for the employee's coverage and contributories are made through payroll deductions. Employees in the Washington, DC area may select either the Blue Cross Blue Shield (CareFirst) Premier or Standard Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Blue Cross Blue Shield Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO), Blue Cross Blue Shield Out of Area,or the Kaiser HMO plan.

The PPO plans permit participants to select an "in-network" or "out-of-network" provider from among Blue Cross Blue Shield’s participating physicians. The EPO works similar to the PPO with no Primary Care Physicians required and no referrals for specialist, however there are no out of network benefits. Kaiser HMO requires care to be coordinated by a Primary Care Physician and all services must be received in-network. Kaiser is available in the Washington, D.C., area in addition to a few other states. All plans include a prescription drug card program.

For more details regarding the options for a typical Washington, DC employee please see the 2008 Medical Plan Comparison Chart.

Dental:

MetLife Preferred Provider Organization

Dental Preferred Provider Organization (PPOs) has networks of participating dentists that provide dental care at negotiated rates. The employee receives a higher level of benefits utilizing in-network providers. In addition, the employee will pay less if in-network providers are used because the cost is calculated using discounted fees that the plan has negotiated with the dentist.

Aetna Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO)

Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) is a managed dental care plan with a network of participating dentists that provide services at the negotiated rates. The employee will be offered the DMO plan based on his/her zip code and plan availability.

For more details regarding the options for a typical Washington, DC employee please see the 2008 Dental Plan Comparison Chart.

Retirement Programs:
For National Headquarters Opportunities

Much of what we do at the American Red Cross deals with saving.
Saving lives. Saving resources. There are three ways for our employees to save for something equally important: their future.

Retirement System:

Employees are enrolled in our defined benefit pension plan after completing one year of service in which pay was received for 1,000 hours of work. Full vesting occurs when five years of vesting service have been accrued. The plan is fully funded by the American Red Cross. The Retirement System is designed to provide a monthly pension to vested employees at retirement. Employees are eligible to receive an unreduced monthly pension at age 65 with five years of service. An early retirement option is available.

Savings Plan 401(k):

The American Red Cross Savings Plan has a Red Cross match and this match is fully vested when the employee completes three years of vesting service. Employees can contribute to this Savings Plan on a pre or post tax basis. The plan has a multitude of investment opportunities including the option to self direct your retirement account. There is no waiting period to enroll in the 401(k) plan. Maximum annual contribution amounts based on current tax laws apply.

403(b) Program:

Contributions can be made to the 403(b) program on a pre tax basis. The Red Cross has chosen 3 companies to provide our employees with the option of enrolling in a plan that fits their lifestyles and investment strategies. Lincoln Life and ING provide Annuity Contracts and Vanguard provides a custodial account for investing in Mutual Funds. There is no waiting period to enroll in the 403(b) program.
