When asked how they recruit and retain lifeguards, here is what your colleagues have said...
"We've implemented the GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow program. We encourage all kids in learn-to-swim levels four and up to take GuardStart. We make the program fun, and it really helps get them excited about taking Lifeguarding and working for us in the future. Many of our guards are the kids that have gone through all our swim levels and swam at our pool for years."

"We have been using the GuardStart program to train 14-year-olds as lifeguard assistants. We employ them part-time in non-lifeguard positions. They are anxious to turn 15 and take Lifeguard Training. By starting them young and mentoring them, it is easier to retain them at least through their high school years."

American Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow is designed to prepare 11- to 14-year olds to take Red Cross Lifeguarding certification programs and for future work as lifeguards. The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills that they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism.
