September 22, 2005. Slidell, Louisiana. Letitia Rollins stands at the back door of her house on Shady Lane in Slidell, Louisiana. Tarps cover torn-apart areas of her roof, while tin from the roof has been attached to the door to secure the home. Rollins lives with her husband, Bernard, mother-in-law Ruby and two daughters, 5 and 15 years. In her kitchen, Rollins has stacks of MREs and bottled water, donations she has accepted from the Red Cross. “I can still help out,” Rollins says, and for days pitched in to help at the Red Cross/Salvation Army distribution center, where residents were given desperately needed food and water. “I can’t cry. I’m not in this alone,” she says. “In the process of helping others, someone will help me.” Photo: Marty Robey/American Red Cross

September 21, 2005. Biloxi, Miss., resident Qui Kinard exemplifies the survivor experience of Hurricane Katrina. She held out in her home until the rising water level reached the ceiling of the one-story structure, at which point “…I decided to swim for it!” she says. “I swam for the raft out in front…,” which turned out to be three other survivors clinging to a piece of debris that was floating by the front of her home. She says she clung to the raft for about 4 hours before the water receded. She has been receiving household supplies and visits from the American Red Cross since the storm. October 2, 2005. New Orleans. Residents of six selected areas in New Orleans were allowed back into the city on October 1, 2005 for the first time since Hurricane Katrina to see their homes, or what was left of them. For many the cleanup and rebuilding will be long and hard. The Red Cross opened distribution sites in the six areas on Sunday, October 2, to provide supplies, food and water to the returning residents. Here, volunteers unload load cleanup kits and supplies.
