This September, as part of National Preparedness Month, the Red Cross encourages all Americans to develop a family game plan. Get started using the steps below!
How Red Cross Supports National Preparedness Month
Different types of disasters and emergencies happen in communities across the country, but there are key steps that every household can take to be better prepared for them. If you do nothing else this month, take time to create a disaster plan including a home fire escape plan.

Continuing their committed partnership with the American Red Cross, American Airlines is launching the Flying Kind sweepstakes. This fall as part of National Preparedness Month, Boise Paper and American Red Cross are launching Pledge to Prepare – a campaign encouraging people across the country to get prepared before a disaster strikes. Boise Paper will include #PledgeToPrepare messaging on their X-9® their multi-use copy paper reams and cartons, and the limited-edition cartons will encourage repurposing the boxes as personal and family Emergency Preparedness Kits. Circle K Florida and West Coast Divisions are pleased to offer another year of partnership with their customers to raise funds year-round to support the services of the American Red Cross. In west coast stores, during the months of September and October, customers will be asked to make a donation to support the Red Cross' ability to respond every eight minutes to an emergency. Customers will be asked to make a plan so that they are prepared for disasters at home, school and work. At Circle K stores in Florida, customers will have the opportunity to donate to the Red Cross and beginning in October, customers can also play the new Facebook game “Fire Safety Land” to learn important home fire safety tips. Disney is proud to work with the American Red Cross to develop tools that make it simple for families to prepare and to support programs that help ease kids’ fears about the unexpected. As the sponsor of The Pillowcase Project, Disney is helping third through fifth graders across the country know the science behind disasters, along with safety actions to stay safe, should something unexpected arise. The Mickey and Friends Disaster Preparedness Activity Book teaches kids and families what to do before, during and after a wide range of emergencies through interactive games and activities. Disney Friends for Change – a global initiative that inspires kids and families to take action and make a difference in their communities – will spotlight an interstitial on its website that highlights the importance of being prepared for disasters. The spot will also air on Disney Channel throughout September. Disney is a member of the Annual Disaster Giving Program, which helps to ensure that the Red Cross is ready to immediately respond when disaster strikes.
In recognition of National Preparedness Month, eBay is encouraging customers to be prepared. Throughout the month of September, you can shop eBay’s Storm Preparedness store to purchase items to help keep you and your loved ones safe should a disaster strike. Customers can also make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief at their point of purchase.
This September, Interstate All Battery Center is encouraging customers to be ready for any emergency. For every Interstate Brand 2- count D battery packs sold in Interstate All Battery Center retail stores from September 1 through December 31, 2016, Interstate Batteries will donate a D battery pack of equal or lesser value up to a maximum of 10,000 packs to support Red Cross Disaster Relief. As a Red Cross Disaster Responder member, Interstate All Battery Center has made a valuable in-kind contribution of batteries to support everyday needs of the organization.
Lowe's is encouraging customers to be prepared for hurricane season and earthquakes. Lowe's is featuring a special end-cap display at select stores in coastal, hurricane-prone communities as well as earthquake-prone communities. End-caps will include tear sheets with a list of recommended preparedness items. As a member of the Red Cross’ Annual Disaster Giving Program, Lowe’s pledges donations on an ongoing basis in advance of disasters to help ensure the Red Cross can take immediate action. Since teaming with the Red Cross in 1999, Lowe’s and its customers have contributed more than $27 million for disaster relief.
Master Lock is proud to announce their third annual sweepstakes and fundraiser to support the urgent need of the American Red Cross mission. To help kick off the National Preparedness Month, Master Lock will be reaching out to customers from August 16 – August 31, 2016 to help them be prepared. Their Twitter campaign, ‘For Everything worth Protecting’, Master Lock will donate an initial $10,000 then $1 (up to another $10,000) for every consumer who tweets #MasterLockProtectsSweeps with the personal item they would most like to save in a disaster. Throughout the month, Master Lock will also be sharing disaster preparedness tips on their website and social media channels. Campaign participants also have the opportunity to win preparedness items, such as preparedness kits.
For National Preparedness Month 2016, Price Chopper/Market 32 is proud to partner with the Red Cross on the “Give What Fire Takes” campaign.
