Get Prepared, California! Auction

The California Earthquake Authority and the American Red Cross are joining forces for a fifth year to help raise awareness about the importance of preparing to survive and recover after the next damaging earthquake.

To help motivate more people to increase their earthquake preparedness, we have joined forces to promote the unique event: the Get Prepared, California! Auction in April and the Great California ShakeOut™ in October.

The Get Prepared, California! Auction℠, sponsored by CEA and working with iHeartMedia, donates all proceeds to American Red Cross disaster-preparedness efforts in California. To date, the auction has raised $715,000, all to benefit the Red Cross.

Last year's Auction℠ raised over $191,000. Proceeds were presented to the Red Cross on stage during the Wango Tango concert event in Los Angeles.

This year, we’re kicking off the auction on April 1 and you will get a unique opportunity to bid on more than 25 unique auction items and experiences. Click here to check out the items.

CEA and Red Cross Strong Partnership

  • This joint preparedness effort by the CEA and the Red Cross was partially prompted by a UCLA School of Public Health and Survey Research Center study that reported in 2010 that “relatively few households have acted to mitigate losses and reduce injuries” resulting from Earthquakes.
  • California has about two-thirds of the nation’s earthquake risk. Some 2,000 known faults crisscross the state, producing an average of 102 earthquakes a day – more than 37,000 a year.
  • According to the 2010 State of California Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan, Strong earthquakes of magnitude 6 to 6.9 strike California an average of once every year two to three years. An earthquake this size can cause major damage if the epicenter is near a densely populated area.
  • In years past… April was recognized as Earthquake preparedness month, but we all know that we should be prepared every month of the year.
  • Did you know? The Great San Francisco Earthquake (magnitude 7.9) occurred at 5:12 am on April 18, 2906. More than 3,000 people lost their lives and it left 225,000 individuals homeless because of the extensive structural damage.
  • In Southern California, the 1994 earthquake (magnitude 6.7) caused more than $40 billion in disaster losses, 57 deaths and close to 12,000 injuries.
Prepare for Earthquakes Now

CEA and the Red Cross hope to motivate more Californians to make earthquake preparedness a priority. To accomplish this goal, expertise from the American Red Cross on preparing a kit, making a family disaster plan, and being informed, has been combined with CEA’s residential-insurance expertise and loss-mitigation knowledge to promote a comprehensive preparedness plan for California Residents.
