This 180-hour course trains students to provide quality care to residents in nursing homes. Upon successful completion of the course, students will qualify to take the state competency exam to be a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA).

The goal of the Nurse Assistant Training Course is to prepare the nurse assistant for state certification and to function as an efficient, knowledgeable and safe CNA.

The course has three components:

  • 63 hours of theory/lab work conducted in the classroom.
  • 100 hours of supervised clinical training at an accredited and state-approved long term care facility.
  • 17 hours of other enhancements.

The course uses American Red Cross curriculum and is taught by licensed nurses approved by the Department of Health Services.

The instructors deliver the course content through lectures, demonstrations and exposure of the students to actual nursing procedures and techniques while in a clinical setting. Students will learn a variety of skills such as taking and recording patient blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, and respirations; assisting with the activities of daily living, including bathing and hygiene, using the toilet, etc. Students’ knowledge is evaluated on an ongoing basis through tests and quizzes.
