Did you know the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region has a dedicated Green Team? They began their mission last February, led by Mac Hightower and Adam Horvath. The L.A. Green Team is the first of a national initiative that is committed to help mitigate the climate crisis and reduce our environmental footprint. The multi-year plan hopes to cut the organization’s emissions, reduce waste and lower water use.
To kick off this year’s Earth Day, the team is collecting e-waste from multiple Red Cross sites in Southern California. Not only will this green project properly dispose of electronic devices within the organization, but it will take count of all the electronic devices not being used, creating a manifest that can help with future purchasing decisions and reduce unnecessary costs.
The L.A. Green Team will launch sustainability projects each quarter that includes the reduction of water usage, reduced emissions, increased recycling and working with the electric vehicle pilot program. The team’s overall goal is to help give tips to live a more sustainable, everyday life.
“The things we do every day affect environmental disasters” said team member Horvath, “Maybe, if we mitigate those things, we can reduce the severity of those disasters and focus more on the humanitarian side.”
