The Rivermark Moms' Club (RMC) captured major media attention for organizing extremely successful bake sale fundraisers in support of Red Cross missions for Tsunami and Katrina relief that raised over $74,834.

Founded in December 2003 by Ciara Balagot as a play-group for Pre-Schoolers that also provides a discussion forum for working and stay-at-home parents, the Rivermark Moms' Club (RMC) captured major media attention for organizing extremely successful bake sale fundraisers in support of Red Cross missions for Tsunami and Katrina relief. What was their secret for success?

"These passionate and dedicated women mastered the fine art of having corporations match the $37,417 funds they raised - doubling the amount to $74,834, says Arra Yerganian, former volunteer Board Chair of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter.

Centex Homes-a builder in the Rivermark community which is located near the Montague Expressway and North First Street-was the first corporation to match the RMC’s fundraising efforts with a $15,150 donation. Moving forward, the RMC organized more bake sales and continued to ask for matching corporate gifts that created the outstanding results.

For this extraordinary achievement the Santa Clara Valley Chapter nominated the RMC in the Outstanding Philanthropic Organization category for the National Philanthropy Day Awards on Friday, November 17th. The Silicon Valley Philanthropy Day 2006 luncheon and awards ceremony was held at the Fairmont hotel in San Jose.

On behalf of the entire RMC members, founder Ciara Balagot said, 'We were honored to have been nominated by the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Red Cross for this award. As parents, our members feel a great affinity and sympathy for the moms, dads, and children affected by the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. We were motivated to do what little we could to support the disaster relief efforts of the Red Cross because we know what great work the organization does both here in the U.S. and abroad. We are extremely grateful to those who supported our fundraisers and to the relief workers who are still striving every day to help Tsunami and Katrina survivors rebuild their lives.'
