The Red Cross helps members of the military, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service.

The Red Cross has served more than 1 million military families since 9/11. Our volunteers provide home comforts and critical services on bases and in military hospitals around the world, support military families during deployments and emergencies, and serve our nation’s veterans after their service ends.

Service to the Armed Forces: Client Casework Chair
One-and-a-half-year commitment
Six months of training; One year working as Client Casework Chair

The Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Client Casework Chair works closely with American Red Cross staff in coordinating and administrating all aspects of an ongoing program including planning, organizing, leading, and controlling program activities. Appointee supports SAF staff to achieve long-term organizational success and complete assignments and projects to help achieve the strategic goals set forth by the Region and National Headquarters. The Service to the Armed Forces Family Follow-Up Program provides quality case management services for active duty, veterans, retirees, and their families during emergent and often challenging situations. Through education, referral, advocacy, case management and other support services, Service to the Armed Forces aims to promote self-resiliency and self-reliance within the military community.

Qualifications: Have strong verbal and written communication skills; exhibit excellent multi-tasking and organization skills, and work proficiently under pressure; enjoy sourcing new programs and organizations within the community through various methods of research; demonstrate strong interpersonal and customer service skills; enthusiastically work independently or as part of a team, with minimal supervision; choose to reach for leadership growth opportunities; possess basic to excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office, Internet; exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skills; a flexible, passionate individual that inspires others to continue volunteering and to do good work in our community.

*Preferred Qualifications*
Licensed Clinical Social Worker with valid license to practice, current /valid hospital approved credentials to practice, experience working in the non-profit sector. Effectively makes use of community resources and ability to create relationships with external companies to support team members and their mission.

Service to the Armed Forces Program Assistant
One-and-a-half-year commitment
Six months of training; One year working as Program Assistant


The Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Client Casework Program Assistant(s) assists American Red Cross staff and Program Chair by overseeing the daily operations of the SAF Family Follow-Up Program. Program Assistant(s) work to achieve long-term organizational success and complete assignments and projects to help achieve the strategic goals set forth by the Region and National Headquarters. The Program Assistant(s) mentor SAF Client Casework volunteers and interns by appropriately delegating tasks and projects. Please note: this position is only available to Senior Level Volunteers/ Interns with at least six months of service. Program Assistants will manage, direct and train the Client Casework Admin Assistant(s) and Client Casework volunteers and interns with direction from staff members. Engage with clients, complete comprehensive client assessments, and provide casework skills, as necessary, as well as develop, access, coordinate and monitor service plans and documentation. They will lead and/or support short-term projects from conception to completion as well as develop and administer reports, training and presentations. Program Assistants will implement new programs and participate in local outreach, awareness projects, events, and fundraising. Additionally, they will provide training and presentations to internal departments and external organizations. Program Assistant(s) provide direct assistance to staff member(s) to include: the ability to perform all tasks normally carried out by staff member(s), when needed, while continually exploring local community and resources and remaining current on all functions of SAF Self-Service and its components. Conduct ongoing and short-term case management services and complete comprehensive client assessments via phone or in-person, as needed. Maintain optimal organization and practice exceptional time management skills and uphold a strong will to succeed and dedication to expanding and fulfilling the long-term goals of the SAF Self-Service Program.
