Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

For over 40 years, the American Red Cross Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program has helped pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding individuals as well as children up to the age of 5 eat well, stay healthy, and be active. WIC provides families with nutritious foods to help supplement their diets, information and education on healthy eating, breastfeeding information and support, and referrals to health care and critical social services.

The WIC and Red Cross partnership was developed when the WIC program was initiated in the state of California in 1974. Red Cross nursing personnel were working with pregnant, inner city teens and saw that the administration of the WIC program seemed like a perfect way to assist families in need.

Today, WIC serves 1 in 2 children in California. In San Diego, our agency serves more than 100,000 families annually at our 15 locations. We also support military families by providing WIC locations on or near base. The WIC program is available regardless of race, color, sex or national origin, and U.S. citizenship is not required to participate. Learn more about who qualifies for WIC.
