Disaster Response and Relief

Red Cross volunteers make disaster preparations
Disaster Services are some of the most vital and visible responsibilities the Red Cross undertakes. From home fires in South Louisiana to wildfires and tornadoes in the Midwest and hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, the American Red Cross is always there. Your support helps us provide 24-hour emergency response, immediate relief, and invaluable recovery assistance to disaster victims.

From July 2011 to June 2012, the Red Cross in Southeast Louisiana responded to more than 800 disasters and assisted 964 families in the 13-parish region. Our volunteers provided on-site food, shelter, direct financial support, and emotional support to individuals and families devastated by their losses.

Partnership opportunities include:

Fire Hurts-Red Cross Helps

Where would you turn if you lost everything in a fire?
The Southeast Louisiana Chapter "Fire Hurts … Red Cross Helps" campaign was created to meet the immediate needs of South Louisiana victims of fire. The Red Cross is committed to providing community education regarding fire prevention, how to protect yourself in case of fire and the importance of homeowner and renter insurance. Every dollar raised for the "Fire Hurts" campaign is used to provide direct assistance to local families affected by fire in the form of food, clothing and shelter, and other necessities such as replacement of medications and eyeglasses, as well as canteen services to emergency responders on the scene.

Ready When the Time Comes Program for Corporate Groups – The Ready When the Time Comes program provides disaster-relief training to volunteer teams from local corporate and business groups, as well as community groups. Our corporate sponsors can also provide critical financial support to ensure the chapter has the continued ability to provide community training. All participants receive free basic disaster relief and personal preparedness training. Ready When the Time Comes volunteers serve as a reserve task force that is called upon when a large-scale local emergency relief operation requires increased staffing.

Comfort Kit Assembly – Engage your employees in this essential service project while offsetting the cost of the items included in the bags. Comfort kits, containing basic personal hygiene supplies, are distributed to individuals displaced by disasters. This small gift means a great deal since disaster victims are often left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing at the time of the disaster. Each kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shave gel, soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, pack of pocket tissues, washcloth and a comb.

Disaster Safety Canvasing – Your company also may participate in a disaster safety canvas event to distribute safety information on disaster prevention, preparation and response.

Match Your Employees' Gifts – Promote and match employee giving to the American Red Cross – Louisiana Capital Area Chapter. A corporate match is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate corporate citizenship and support an organization that is important to your employees.

Customer Donation Programs – Give customers the ability to donate at the register or donate a percentage of your sales. Give a kick-off gift or match donations to inspire excitement and boost participation.
