Holidays for Heroes

  • Holiday mail for heroes
The Red Cross in Maine will collect cards by April 15, 2017 to distribute to military units and veterans’ health care facilities across the state, in honor of Armed Forces Day (May 20, 2017). Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday of May, is a day for all Americans to celebrate the military men and women who serve our country, and the Red Cross would like to share your cards – notes of thank and gratitude – with service members stationed in Maine, and veterans who are patients in our Maine Veterans Homes and the Veterans Affairs medical center.

Some of you may recall the Red Cross’s Holiday for Heroes program taking place during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s time frame; however, in 2014, nationally the organization stopped collecting and sending cards because of the significant draw down of U.S. forces deployed and stationed overseas. As a result the Red Cross no longer had the deployed staff (members of the Red Cross were deployed with the military when the Department of Defense requested our services) to receive and distribute the cards to our Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and DoD civilians overseas.

For the last two years, the American Red Cross in Maine shared your Holiday for Heroes cards with veterans who are residents in several of the state’s veterans’ homes, the Veterans Affairs hospital and several of our military members. Over the course of this program, we learned LOTS of people visit and share good wishes with these people during November and December but many of these veterans and service members do not hear from well-wishers during the rest of the year. So, we are going to do our part to change that and send these cards on Armed Forces Day.

Again, The American Red Cross of Maine requests you provide your cards of thanks, cheer and good wishes for service members stationed in Maine, veterans who are patients in our Maine Veterans Homes and the VA medical center no later than April 15th.

Mail cards to us: American Red Cross of Maine

If you would prefer to drop off the cards at your local Red Cross office in Lewiston, Topsham, Bangor or Caribou, please do so between April 1st and April 15th.

Thank you so much for remembering those who have or still are serving in the armed forces of our country. I hope we can work together to let them know we remember then throughout the year.
