Please join us in a nationwide smoke alarm installation!

Seven times a day in the United States, someone dies in a home fire. You can help decrease this number by volunteering for one of our smoke alarm installations and Home Fire Safety Education Events! Please scroll down to see specific dates and times.
Please join us in this nationwide smoke alarm installation and Home Fire Safety Education initiative to reduce the number of fire deaths & injuries by 25% within the next five years!

Age Requirements: You must be 13 years or older in order to participate. Child care is not available on the premises. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Volunteer Roles: Volunteers will work in teams of 5 in the following roles
  • Smoke Alarm Installation
  • Home Fire Safety Education
  • Data Collection
  • Door Knocking
*Your specific role will be identified on the day of the event*

Please remember to wear comfortable clothing, comfortable shoes, weather appropriate items (hat, raincoat, sunscreen...)

Please note: Additional updates, including the address of the staging areas, will be sent to volunteers via email prior to the event.

1. The Red Cross and its partners will install a limited number of free smoke alarms for those who cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or for those who are physically unable to install a smoke alarm.
2. The Red Cross installs a limited number of specialized bedside alarms for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
3. A number of organizations are partnering with the Red Cross to accomplish the goals of our Home Fire Campaign. Depending on where you live and other factors, it is possible that we will forward your request to one of our partner organizations so they can contact you to set up an appointment.
4. The Greater Chesapeake Region provides installation services in Greater Chesapeake only. If you live outside of this area and would like to identify your local region office, please visit RedCross.org (or call 1-800-REDCROSS). 5. If you are able to purchase and install your own smoke alarm, but would like information on home fire safety and smoke alarm installation, please visit redcross.org/homefire.
