August 2014 - Linda Hogan

Tonia Bennett joined the American Red Cross in June 2015 with a passion for the Military and Veteran communities, being the mother of two active duty service members. She has accumulated nearly 1,000 hours of service in this short time! During the last two years, she has participated in a number of events with our Service to Armed Forces (SAF) Department, and helped build a connection with other Military and Veteran organizations that she also actively volunteers with. Tonia is also an active member of the Washington County Disaster Action Team (DAT), and has responded to house fires and floods at all hours of the day and night. She even negotiated with her employer to leave work when we had no other available responders!! Tonia is always willing to jump in to do what is needed. After a large apartment fire in Hagerstown, she trained to serve as a caseworker because of the great need to follow up with our clients.

Most notably, Tonia has served as the lead for the Home Fire Campaign in Western MD, in which we install smoke alarms in community homes to reduce the risk of fire-related deaths and injuries. She has recruited and coordinated volunteer groups and government partners, and has traveled to early-morning events and worked long weekends to make these campaign events successful. She recently engaged her United Methodist Churches to educate and recruit volunteers to support our DAT needs in Washington county, in addition to sharing need for Home Fire Campaign volunteers and blood drives.

Tonia is always there to help, and we are so lucky to have her as a volunteer and leader in our Red Cross community. Thank you, Tonia, for all you do!
