Josephine Macharia joined the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross in August of 2016 as an intern with our “Services to Military and Veteran Communities” Department, while pursuing her degree in Social Work at Morgan State University. After graduating and completing a rigorous internship, Josephine transitioned into volunteering as a Red Cross social worker at Baltimore City’s Veteran Treatment Court, which aims to rehabilitate, rather than incarcerate, former military members with first-time or minor offenses. The partnership between our local Red Cross and the Veteran’s Court is one of the first in the country, and Josephine is instrumental in ensuring that our local veterans have the community resources available to them in order to lead productive lives as civilians.
In just twelve months, Josephine has volunteered over 600 hours of service in this role! She is one of the kindest, most dedicated people you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Her smile, positive attitude, and work ethic are just a few of her qualities that make her the hero that she is. Thank you, Josephine, for all of your hard work and support of the American Red Cross!
