Supporting Veterans and Veteran Hospitals

Each year through the VA Voluntary Services Program (VAVS), nearly 1000 American Red Cross volunteers proudly give more than 85,000 hours to help veterans in VA Medical Treatment Facilities across the country. Volunteers from Red Cross Offices serve at more than 140 of the nearly 200 VA medical treatment facilities in existence. It is their way of saying thank-you to that special group of men and women who answered their country’s call and who are now cared for each day in VA clinics and medical centers. Each VA medical treatment facility has specific volunteer needs that provide Red Cross volunteers with unique opportunities to serve in a variety of roles such as:

  • Assisting combat-wounded service members
  • Patient Visitor
  • VA Transportation Programs (drivers)
  • Hospital Escort
  • Pharmacy Assistant
  • Coffee/Snack/Book Cart
  • Respite Care
  • Hospice Care
  • Animal Visitation
  • Information Desk Worker
