Armacost Family Humanitarian Award

Kansas City Red Cross Heroes

Heroes are those who give back to the community. Some give monetarily, while others give of their time and talent. Regardless of how one decides to give back, it all makes a difference in the lives of many, especially those in need or faced with disaster.

The Armacost Family Humanitarian Award is the highest award of the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City. This award is presented for:

  • Outstanding and selfless contributions for community services that help the needy
  • Providing support and comfort to military members and their families
  • Benefiting the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and its products
  • Promoting educational programs in health and safety
  • Funding international relief and development programs
  • The award was named after Don and Lucille Armacost, Sr. and their family for their dedicated service and passion the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City.

This year, we were honored to present the Armacost Family Humanitarian Award to two of Kansas City’s most humble philanthropists. Norman and Lorraine Martin work quietly behind the scenes to make a huge impact on the work of the American Red Cross and other charities they support.

The Martin’s have given more than 30 major gifts to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross appreciates and counts on their annual support, which funds our work for Disaster Services, Health and Safety Services, and our emergency services to the Armed Forces.

The Martin’s have a great heart for helping with International and Domestic Disaster Relief. As philanthropists, they have assisted the Red Cross with major support for the refugee crisis in Europe as thousands of people were displaced from Syria. When a major disaster strikes the United States, the Martin’s are among the first philanthropists to provide a gift for disaster relief to provide help and hope to families as they focus on recovery.

Last year, the American Red Cross and Kansas City area hospitals identified a community need to add a Blood Distribution Center and an Immunohematology Reference Lab. This new Blood Distribution Center and Lab would allow the Red Cross to expand and improve upon its 24-hour distribution of blood to area hospitals. Once again, Norman and Lorraine Martin provided a leadership gift to launch our capital campaign to get the Blood Distribution Center and an Immunohematology Reference Lab in place to better service the patients in the Kansas City area.

Philanthropy is translated from Greek as the love of humanity. Norman and Lorraine Martin demonstrate their love and compassion for humanity through their generous philanthropy to Kansas City and to the American Red Cross.

Thank you, Norman and Lorraine, for your generous gifts to the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and making a difference in the lives of many!
