About Our Internship Program

The American Red Cross of the Greater Cincinnati-Dayton Region offers numerous engaging opportunities for college students throughout our 27-county region. We have chapter offices in Cincinnati, Dayton, Portsmouth, Troy, Springfield and Greenville. An internship with the American Red Cross provides students the opportunity to gain leadership, communication, and practical skills in a professional setting and in their areas of interest, while serving their communities. Student help gives the American Red Cross the ability to better fulfill its mission and services to the community by benefiting from the skills and dedication of a committed group of student interns. Through training and mentorship students:

  • Gain professional experience and exposure to the non-profit sector.
  • Work with and develop department specific projects/responsibilities to carry out the Red Cross mission at the local level.
  • Receive networking, personal and professional development opportunities.
  • *Please note: Students with academic requirements are called "interns," while students undertaking a work assignment for personal growth reasons are called "Academic Service Learners" (ASLs). Both are equally important to us and treated as fellow staff members during their tenure.

  • What You Need To Know Before Applying

To participate in our internship program, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

An individualized intern/ASL agreement is created for each student specifying the work they do as well as how many hours they work. In general, students are expected to work 10-25 hours per week.

Within the Greater Cincinnati-Dayton Region, there are four offices that offer intern programs: Cincinnati, Dayton, Portsmouth and Northern Miami Valley. Available positions vary according to the needs of each office, but the program typically offers opportunities in almost every Red Cross department.

All internships/ASL positions are unpaid* and can be taken for credit (intern) or non-credit (ASL), depending on the student’s needs. All applicants must be enrolled in a post-secondary education program.

    * Internships in communications during the summer are paid as a result of a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation.
