Karen Conklin has served as the Executive Director in the Mahoning Valley area since 2010. She was recruited to facilitate the integration between the Red Cross of Mahoning County and the Red Cross of Trumbull County into the Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley. In the spring of 2014 Columbiana County was merged into the Mahoning Valley. She oversaw another union between the Red Cross of Ashtabula County, the Red Cross of Jefferson County and the Red Cross of Mahoning Valley in the fall of 2014. She brings over 30 years of leadership and fund raising expertise to the Lake to River Chapter.
In an effort to centralize the organization and provide better customer service delivery, Karen also oversaw the move from the historic Warren building (now home to Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics) to a central facility in Trumbull County.
Karen lends her skills to many community boards including Youngstown State Alumni Board, Nonprofit Leadership Board and the Penguin Club. Additionally, she works with five local United Way organizations, Leadership Mahoning Valley, Steel Valley Wrestling Officials, Food & Hunger Board, and the Animal Welfare League.
Previous to her work at the Red Cross, Karen served as Executive Director to Pawsibilities, The Humane Society of Greater Akron where she worked with the Board to raise 4 million dollars to move the Society from a barn to a new 68,000 sq. foot facility. She served as CEO of the Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council and Director of Development at the Butler Institute of American Art and at PBS 45/49. For many years she has owned and run Conklin Consulting, a firm which focuses on marketing and strategic visioning for clients -- both non-profit and for profit.
Karen is a proud graduate of Youngstown State University with a BS in BA. She is a proud mother of seven, and grandmother to five.
