In addition to connecting you with programs and services offered by the Red Cross, the Northeast Ohio Region offers referrals and resources for those in need. When additional help is required, we link clients with agencies that provide long-term assistance in the form of food, shelter, clothing, furniture and more. Below is a list of agencies that can provide assistance outside of the Red Cross domain.

Summit County

Goodwill Industries - Elizabeth Clark Emergency Fund

Services: Offers gift cards that can be used at Goodwill Stores in Medina and Portage Counties for the purchase of clothing, furniture and household goods. Also provides gift cards for interview clothing for those seeking employment. Must be referred by a social service agency (a caseworker or someone who is familiar with the client's situation).

Inner City Hope

Services: Provides emergency clothing for youth whose families have endured a crisis situation such as a fire, flood, deprivation, natural disaster or emergency child removal/foster placement. Offers and accepts donations of unopened packages of hygiene essentials and gently used children's clothing including shoes and coats for youth.

Hours: Call for appointment. Emergency assistance available 24 hours, 6 days a week (closed Sundays).

Eligibility/Limitations: Serves youth ages 17 and under residing in Akron and surrounding communities. Family must have experienced a crisis situation such as a fire, flood, deprivation, natural disaster or emergency child removal/foster placement. First time clients must provide a I.D. Clients also need a referral name or slip and they need to bring their own bag.


Good Neighbors

Services: Emergency clothing and food for families and individuals.

Society of Saint Vincent DePaul - Ozanam Center

Services: Offers couches, living room chairs, dressers, mattresses, box springs, and bed frames for people in need.

Hours: Saturdays, 10:00am to 2:00pm (except holiday weekends). Pickups only.

Eligibility/Limitations: Serves all of Summit County residents and parts of Medina and Stark County residents. Client needs to bring photo I.D. Intake Procedure: A home visit is required before an individual or family can receive furniture. The process takes 4-6 weeks before receiving furniture.


Family Promise of Summit County

Services: Assists homeless families with shelter, food, case management and hospitality while utilizing resources within local congregations and the community.

Portage County

Volunteers of America

Services: Free furniture and household items for low-income or individuals facing financial hardship in Portage County. Free clothing for those who experienced a disaster in Portage County. Provides low-cost household goods, furniture, and clothing with referral.

Miller Community House

Services: Provides a short-term emergency shelter (up to 30 days) for homeless individuals and families of Portage County seeking permanent housing. Shelter is accessible 24/7.

Eligibility/Limitations: Homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Last permanent address in Portage County. Currently Sober and is not actively psychotic, suicidal or homicidal. Does not have any active warrant out for arrest or violence criminal history.


Family and Community Services - County Clothing Center / Phyllis Zumkehr

Services: Offers free of charge gently used clothing, personal and household items, small and large appliances, silverware, pots, dishes, bedding, and small furniture.

Eligibility/Limitations: Portage County residents who are low-income or who are facing financial difficulties. Photo ID may be required.


Catholic Charities Serving Stark and Portage Counties

Services: Provides assistance for emergency needs including rent and mortgage; utilities; emergency food, household items like toilet paper and cleaning supplies, and work-related expenses (e.g. work boots, transportation to a new job, etc.); and referrals to other community agencies, and possibly other services essential to well-being. Operates an emergency food pantry at Canton site.

Medina County

Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority (MMHA)

Services: Manages properties and programs that provide affordable housing for eligible Medina County residents.

Eligibility/Limitations: Must be 18 years old at least. Must live in Medina County at time application is filed.


County Animal Rescue and Evacuation (CARE)

Services: Assists local residents with rescuing of animals at disaster sites, arranging care for 72-hours for pets in C.A.R.E homes or shelters, transportation of animals to temporary holding facilities, arranging care for 72-hours for livestock and wildlife at off-site facilities.

Medina County Jobs and Family Services

Services: Offers a variety of public assistance programs, each designed to provide support to your household. Provides services related to: child care, food, health and pregnancy, Medicaid, disability, transportation, and emergency assistance.

2-1-1 First Call for Help – Medina County

Services: 2-1-1 is a free community service you can use to get information about social, health and government resources 24 hours a day, every day. Simply dial 2-1-1 or browse the online directory to find the resources you need. 2-1-1 is not an emergency line. If you have an emergency — a situation that requires police, fire or medical personnel, for instance — you should call 9-1-1 immediately.
