More than Just a Ride - The WHEELS Program of Chisholm Trail WHEELS drivers from the Chisholm Trail Chapter help clients get out and about. |
Seniors and persons with disabilities have a safe way to reach doctor's appointments, pharmacies and vocational training thanks to the efforts of WHEELS drivers at the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter in Fort Worth, TX. Their program, established in 1983, provides service to 39 cities for as many as 3,000 individuals each year. It is the only program of its kind to provide transportation across all of Tarrant County, often reaching clients in rural areas that lack public transportation routes. With 15 drivers and around 33,500 trips annually, the program reaches one of the basic needs of community members - getting from point A to point B.
Drivers are also able to get to know their clients and recognize problems when they arise. In fact, all drivers are trained in First Aid/CPR, defensive driving, blood-borne pathogen prevention and passenger assistance techniques.
"We are often the difference between someone being able to stay at home alone or being placed in a nursing facility," said Director of Transportation Leah Schumann. Clients who might not otherwise go to appointments have a chance to stay healthy and independent thanks to the devoted Red Cross staff.
