American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes Provides Treats without Tricks at Halloween Brunch for Seniors

Groucho Marx (Lauren Cole, right) enjoys brunch with Ethel De Cook, another costumed guest at the Meals on Wheels Halloween Brunch in Seneca Falls, New York.

A railroad man and Raggedy Ann came together for a bite to eat during last October's national Make a Difference Day. In Seneca Falls, NY, the Meals on Wheels Program of the American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes and the Office for the Aging cosponsored their first Halloween Brunch for seniors. Guests of the brunch were members of the Meals on Wheels program that has served northern Seneca County residents since 1980.

Red Cross volunteers and local short- and long-term care facilities transported Meals on Wheels clients to the festive event. A clown, a mummy and Groucho Marx appeared alongside guests who enjoyed the musical talents of area college students and a local dance group. Local high school and college students and Red Cross volunteers dressed for the occasion to serve the 100 guests in a family-style setting.

The Meals on Wheels program aids elderly persons who lack the resources to provide for their own nutritional needs. Meals are delivered every weekday, except for holidays, for both lunch and dinner, allowing clients to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. American Red Cross volunteers serve as smiling faces to often homebound seniors who are often physically, emotionally or mentally handicapped or convalescing and unable to shop for themselves.

The chapter's 93 Meals on Wheels volunteers serve more than 18,500 meals per year. In a typical week, they serve 60 clients. Certified dieticians plan the meals; low fat, heart-healthy, low sodium and diabetic meals are available. At the beginning of each winter season, volunteers deliver an emergency meal bag to each client. The bag contains non-perishable canned foods that clients can rely on in the event that severe weather conditions prevent volunteers from being able to deliver food.

Carol Scialdone, a grandmother and Red Cross volunteer, delivers meals along with her husband, daughter and grandchildren. "We know we are so blessed," said Carol, "we want to do something to help others."
