WHEELS: A Driving Force in the American Red Cross Louisville Area Chaptervolunteer transporting client

Since its inception in 1976, the WHEELS program of the American Red Cross Louisville Area Chapter has been providing transportation to older and disabled persons to help meet the essential needs of their physical and nutritional health. The priorities of the program are to provide immediate transportation services to individuals going to nutritional centers and medical appointments, including kidney and radiation treatment. WHEELS also helps with additional transportation for everyday needs such as grocery trips, educational programs and other social services. The WHEELS program serves a seven county area, and there is no charge for the service. In the Red Cross tradition of volunteerism, the chapter utilizes volunteers to drive vehicles, answer phones and escort passengers.
