In the time that Harold Lewis has served the American Red Cross, the Vietnam War began and ended, America moved into the age of technology, and our country has known both tranquility and terrorism. Since Harold has been with the American Red Cross, women have been liberated and television has been colorized. Harold has volunteered his time, talents and energy to the American Red Cross for 41 years.
According to the parameters of the Volunteer of the Year Award, Harold has exemplified the heart of the Red Cross mission and earned this award from the St. Louis Area Chapter in 2002. Harold’s continued outstanding volunteer commitment, performance and impact has clearly made a difference in the day to day operations of our Service Center. Some things are impossible to measure such as: the number of human lives he has touched through the floods of the 1990’s and the countless other disaster responses over the past four decades. Countless lives have been influenced by Harold as he has worn many Red Cross hats. He has served as a Red Cross Instructor, Shelter Manager, Blood Services Volunteer, Disaster Action Team Member, Leader and Trainer, Community Disaster Education Presenter, He has served on numerous committees at both the Chapter and Service Center levels. To this day he actively serves as a DAT Member, attending regular meetings, gives advise freely, and is considered a mentor and invaluable resource to other DAT Leaders and members. The Service Center’s staff looks to Harold for advice and answers that can only come after a lifetime of service. His leadership has encouraged numerous volunteers and his compassion has comforted countless victims of disaster.
Of course behind every great man is a wonderful woman. Harold’s wife, Millie has also served the American Red Cross as a volunteer and has been by Harold’s side since they met in the 8th grade.
