The Red Cross...Woven Through History
Flags from the American Red Cross Museum Collection

The American Red Cross flag flies on Red Cross Square.

Flags have played an important role in the history of the American Red Cross and other public health organizations in the country. An early method of mass communication, nineteenth and twentieth century American Red Cross volunteers raised flags above designated areas to mark the location at which disaster victims could find help. Today, the American Red Cross flag, a symbol of humanitarian relief and hope, still flies proudly in front of the national headquarters complex just a block from the White House.
