$25,000 Walmart Foundation Grant Provides Scholarships

Nurse Aid Training

Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s Hawaii State Giving Council, the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross has been able to provide 19 unemployed individuals in Hawaii with scholarships for the Red Cross Nurse Aide Training Program. The program offers individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality health care as a certified nurse aide (CNA).

Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii State Chapter, said, “Through Walmart’s

generosity, unemployed individuals in Hawaii have a chance to learn a skill through our Red Cross Nurse Aide

Training Program that not only will lead to employment opportunities, but also will provide the students with a lifelong skill set to care for family, friends and neighbors as they grow older and need assistance. We’ve found that

individuals with caregiving skills are more likely to respond when emergencies or other situations occur that need

medical knowledge or assistance. And, they will be prepared to save the lives of others through their work in hospitals, nursing homes and private home environments.”

“Walmart’s grant is creating a win-win for our communities,” said Jim Tollefson, President and CEO of the

Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. “Not only are they helping the unemployed get retrained for new jobs, but also

they are helping our communities thrive by adding much needed skilled health care professionals to our workforce.”
