Hyannis, Mass, February 20, 2012 – The American Red Cross Cape Cod and Islands Chapter and Cape and Islands United Way will be honoring Al Melcher of Cotuit as Mentor/Role Model to the Disabled during the 10th Annual Heroes Breakfast.
The event will be held at the Resort & Conference Center in Hyannis on March 30, 2012, from 7:00-9:00 am. For tickets, go to redcross.org/ma/hyannis, uwcapecod.org or call (508) 775-1540 ext. 21.
Mr. Melcher was instrumental in organizing the Barnstable Commission on Disability, and served as its chairman for 15 years. While chairman, he was a source of information and referrals for many individuals and groups requesting help with disability issues, and saw funds granted to many local groups dedicated to improving the lives of persons with disabilities. Because of Melcher’s leadership, town and school buildings, beaches and transportation facilities have been surveyed for accessibility.
Mr. Melcher led the effort to have a handicapped-accessible fish deck constructed at Dowses Beach in Osterville, and in his honor a stone has been engraved with his name at the entrance.
The public is invited to join the American Red Cross, Cape and Islands Chapter and the Cape & Islands United Way on March 30th to honor Al Melcher as Mentor/Role Model to the Disabled, along with many other heroes from Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket at the 10th Annual Heroes Breakfast. Tickets for the Breakfast are available via redcross.org/ma/hyannis, uwcapecod.org or by calling (508) 775-1540 ext. 21.
